Ebony Model: Black Is Beautiful

Becoming a fashion or swimsuit model if you are black is much the same as for everyone else. It is true that blacks are under-represented in the modeling world. Statistics say that for every 20 models on an agency's list only three or four will be black. This can be a good thing if you are one of the lucky blacks on that list as you'll get more work.

If you are thinking of trying to become a black model, do your homework first. Read as much as you can about the modeling industry and subscribe to an industry magazine. Build a portfolio and consider a personal trainer. Call modeling agencies that you are interested in and attend any open calls you can find. Most of all be friendly and take criticism seriously and work on it. Enter fresh face contests offered through many magazines such as "Sports Illustrated". Take any work you can get, do trade shows and print shoots, you'll gain name recognition which is a good thing.

Model Search

As we have stated there is a shortage of black models. Just what is it the agencies are looking for? Are they turning more black girls away? No. Are they looking for some specific requirements? Yes. The average fashion model, black or otherwise is usually between 5'9" and 5'11", weight is between 108 and 130 pounds in proportion to height, general body measurements are 34-24-34. There is some flexibility to the measurements but maximum is usually 25" for waist and 35 1/2" for hips. Girls usually start modeling between 13-19 but there are many jobs for girls in their twenties. Agencies are also looking for the "model look". They want small to medium builds, fit but not too muscular with long graceful necks and limbs, strong cheekbones and a square jaw. They prefer wide set large almond eyes with thick eyelashes, medium to full lips with straight white teeth. You should have good posture, carry yourself gracefully, and look healthy.

Once you decide to become a model there are many areas in which you can work. There is high fashion where striking and exotic looks are generally preferred. Fashion print models photos are used in things such as display ads or other print materials. Catalog models pictures are of course used in catalogs. They are usually picked because they represent the type of person that the catalog is targeting. This usually pays very well because quite a large number of photos are usually taken.

The world of commercial modeling's purpose is to advertise products. Models are used to send an image about the product. Physical requirements for this can vary a great deal; many times, they use character models, which are models with an every girl type of look, someone you would find in the grocery store line, or someone's grandmother. Glamour modeling leans toward a more sexual theme. It is modeling things such as swimwear and lingerie and sometimes includes some nudity. Photographic modeling is another option for black models. Photographers need a portfolio just like you do. They want it to be diversified just as you do so there is quite a bit of work for black women.

Finding work as a model takes some work but the payoff is well worth it. Learn all you can about the field, agencies and auditions, read the trade magazines. Look for fashion shows in your local area, such as at department stores, they give you exposure. You might want to consider getting an agent. In order to do this send your pictures and resume to some modeling agencies that seem attractive to you and use the type of black woman you are. Ask the agencies for references and credentials unless of course it's one of the very big names. Never sign more than a one or two year NON-EXCLUSIVE contract. This means you can work for anyone else you wish while working for them. Try to get to know some photographers as they frequently have connections that could lead to modeling jobs. As you gain more and more exposure, more and more doors will open for you in the many diversified fields within modeling.
